BEATTY, Charles (d. 1772). The Journal of a Two Months Tour; with a View of Promoting Religion among the Frontier Inhabitants of Pennsylvania and of Introducing Christianity among the Indians to the Westward of the Alegh-geny Mountains . London: William Davenhill and George Pearch, 1768. 8 o (206 x 126 mm). Half-title. (Half-title lightly browned, some insignificant pale foxing on a few leaves, without the terminal leaf of publisher's advertisements). 19th-century black quarter morocco, green boards (chipped at head of spine). FIRST EDITION of this important Indian narrative by a "zealous and intelligent observer" (Field). Beatty emigrated to Pennsylvania at the age of fourteen in 1729 and became one of the most popular Presbyterian preachers of his day. His narrative recounts his travels in Pennsylvania and Ohio, far beyond the frontiers, made during a period of great interest in this region's history. The warriors of the Delaware and Shawnese had harrassed the missionaries there for over twenty years and Beatty's journal recounts the many massacres he encountered. The work is filled with perceptive details and includes interviews with Indian chiefs and remarks on their languages. "Excellent early account of the frontiers and of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Indians beyond the settlements, especially the Delawares" (Vail). Field 102; Howes B-281; Sabin 4149; Vail 489.
