Founded by controversial publisher Leonard Smithers, with Arthur Symons as editor and Aubrey Beardsley as principal illustrator in the wake of his dismissal from The Yellow Book. Named for the hotel that was the site of Oscar Wilde's trysts, The Savoy was a competitor to Yellow Book, and a deliberate poke in the eye of proper Victorian society. It included contributions from significant writers of the time, including W.B. Yeats, Max Beerbohm and Joseph Conrad.
