The Musical Fantasies of L. Frank Baum.
By Alla T. Ford and Dick Martin. Chicago: Wizard Press, 1958. 80 pp. 8vo (200 x 140 mm). Illustrated by Dick Martin. Original red cloth, pictorial label, blank endpapers, in original dust jacket. One of 500 copies. Condition : jacket lightly toned on verso. Provenance : Fred M. Meyer Collection. rare study of l. frank baum’s plays in the dust jacket . While doing bibliographical research at the Library of Congress, book dealer Ford came across three scenarios for unproduced musical comedies by Baum that he deposited in the Copyright Office. Two (“The Maid of Athens” and “The King of Gee-Whiz”) were written with the bestselling novelist Emerson Hough and the third (“The Pipes o’ Pan”) was the joint effort of Baum and George Scarborough. (Hough later took the title and elements from the scenario for a children’s book he published in 1906.) They were now in the public domain so Ford conspired with artist Martin to privately publish them for the first time with a lengthy introductory essay, a checklist of Baum’s work and numerous rare photographs. While the bibliography is incomplete and at times inaccurate, it was the most reliable survey of the author’s work up to that time with several previously unrecorded entries. Another joint effort advertised on the rear of the jacket, Unexplored Territory in Oz , was never completed. [With:] The Uplift of Lucifer in which is included The Corrugated Giant and Some Other Baumiana Mostly Photographic . By L. Frank Baum. [Inglewood, Ca.: Wagon & Star, Publishers, 1963]. 47 pp. 8vo (240 x 155 mm). Original red-lettered blue textured wrappers. Condition : faint thumbsoiling. Provenance : Fred M. Meyer Collection. second printing with nine lines on the verso of the title page . Weltman unearthed the unpublished skit Baum wrote for the Uplifters Club, the club within the Los Angeles Athletic Club he helped found. “The Uplift of Lucifer; or, Raising Hell’ was performed by the Uplifters in Santa Barbara on October 23, 1915 and again on “L. Frank Baum Night,” January 27, 1920, at the LAAC with movie producer Hal Roach as “Demon Rum.” The music was provided by Tik Tok Man of Oz composer Louis F. Gottschalk. Baum prepared “The Corrugated Giant” as a public recitation to be given by a friend; it is a retelling of Prince Mudturtle (1906) in the manner of the little girl in “Bessie’s Fairy Tale” ( The Ladies’ World , December 1911, pp. 32-33). Weltman suppressed the first printing of this pamphlet that was done without his approval.
