BAUHIN, CASPAR. Prodromos theatri botanici... in quo plantae supra sexcentae ab ipso primùm desripta cum plurimis figuris proponuntur. Francofurti ad Moenum (typis Pauli Iacobi, impensis Ioannis Treudelii) 1620. 4:o. (8), 1-160, (12) pp. About 140 woodcut illustrations. Contemporary brown full leather, worn, gilt partly rubbed off the border, long crack in upper joint and part of spine, gilt spine in six compartments, red edges. Some foxing. Library stamp on inside of upper cover. VD17 23:298033T. Gaspard Bauhin, or Caspar Bauhin (1560- 1624), Swiss botanist who wrote Phytopinax (1596), which described thousands of plants and classified them in a manner that draws comparisons to the later binomial nomenclature of Linnaeus. He was a disciple of the famous Italian physician Girolamo Mercuriale and he also worked on human anatomical nomenclature. Linnaeus honored the Bauhin brothers in the genus name Bauhinia.
