Panorama of the Seat of War. Birds Eye View of Kentucky and Tennessee showing Cairo and part of the southern states.
New York: John Bachmann [n.d. but 1862]. Large chromolithograph (sheet size: 575 x 790 mm). Condition : expert marginal repairs. Matted. wonderful war-date chromolithographed bird’s eye view of tennessee. This view, depicting the region at the time of the Battle of Fort Donelson (12-16 February 1862), with clouds of smoke over the fort, shows the Mississippi in the foreground, with numerous cities in Tennessee identified. At the Battle of Fort Donelson, Brigadier General Ulysses S. Grant beseiged and secured the Confederate surrender - a major victory for the Union and a catastrophe for the South. Kentucky stayed in the Union, and Tennessee became vulnerable to a Northern advance along the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers. Grant, who received the nickname 'Unconditional Surrender', was also promoted to Major General, and came to be considered as an important figure in the western theater of the war. Bachmann published a series of six such views of the Confederate states, and each is quite rare.
