Nicely grained folk art carved pipe, medium brown in color, possibly laurel root. Front of bowl skilfully carved with sunburst-like motif over cluster of four stars, over beautifully carved American eagle in flight with wings upward and out, holding in its beak a flowing riband inscribed "Carnifix [sic] / 10 Sep 1861." The eagle holds a two-link chain in its beak, which is attached to an American shield, with crossed cannon and a pyramid of cannonballs at each side, and multi-palm leaves covering the under section. Bowl's reverse identified to "Folger." The top edge of shank is also relief carved with fancy flute and scroll motifs. Overall width approx. 3 in.; bowl height 2.5 in., dia. 1.625 in. The Battle of Carnifex Ferry took place in Nicholas County, VA (now West Virginia), as part of the Operations in the Western Virginia Campaign on September 10, 1861, and resulted in a Union strategic victory that contributed to the eventual Confederate withdrawal from western Virginia. Subsequently, the campaign helped pave the way for the creation of the separate state of West Virginia. Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co. Condition: Inventory number inked on side of shank (opposite of side facing bowl). Light surface wear. Overall attractive pipe.
