Back to Basics: Four key late Silver Age-early Bronze Age Batman mags showcasing Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams's "return to the basics" approach to the Caped Crusader, repudiating the campiness of the '60s and heralding the gritty approach that defines the modern Batman milieu. "[Writer Denny] O'Neil and [artist Neal] Adams felt that the Rogues Gallery lacked a true intellectual villain, someone whose own genius and physical abilities truly rivaled Batman's. 'I insisted to [editor] Julie [Schwartz] that Batman needed a Moriarty.' It fell upon Denny O'Neil to develop the backstory for the Dark Knight's new nemesis, while Adams designed the character's look. 'Julie gave me the name Ra's al Ghul and told me its translation, 'the Demon's Head,' and he sent me home to create the character,' says O'Neil. 'That was one of the few times where... we deliberately created a new character to fill a void. I think that creatively it was Neal Adams's best work. He got it exactly right. Neal gave him some real dignity.'"— Andrew Farago and Gina McIntyre, Batman: The Definitive History of the Dark Knight in Comics, Film, and Beyond. Insight Editions: 2022, p. 84.
