BATMAN No. 89 Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: National Comics Publications, Inc.] Date Published: February, 1955 Description: CGC certified: Fine+ (6.5). Purple label: Restored (C-1). Off-white pages. Grader notes: "Moisture damage left top of front cover; light rippling to cover; light staple tears; small stain left top of cover; tear seals bottom front cover C-1; top staple replaced." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 66 graded copies (58 Universal, 1 Qualified, 7 Restored). GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A restored 7.0 (C) sold for $179 in 12/15. For comparison purposes, here are recent Universal sales: A 6.5 sold for $650 in 7/23; a 5.5 sold for $456 in 5/22. Credits: Cover: Win Mortimer. Scripts: Bill Finger. Art: Dick Sprang, Charles Paris (inks), Sheldon Moldoff (signed as Bob Kane), and Stan Kaye (inks). Overstreet: "Last pre-Code ish." Bat-cyclopedia: "In February 1955 Batman and Robin journey into the past for an encounter with CAPTAIN JOHN GORDON; match wits with VINCE VARDEN; and recieve an unexpected visit from AUNT AGATHA." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, p. 125. Details: Unfortunately for the Dynamic Duo, Bruce Wayne's nosy Aunt Agatha is visiting Wayne Manor for at least a week. This throws a monkey wrench into Batman and Robin's secret life, as Aunt Agatha immediately spots the pair trying to sneak away wearing their costumes. Aunt Agatha assumes that they must be sneaking out to a masquerade ball, and scolds the boys not bringing rain gear. After Aunt Agatha equips them with rubbers and umbrellas, the Dynamic Duo battle with the Rotor-Robbers, a gang of criminals who can fly using their personal helicopter devices. Chaperone Crone: "First to join the Bat-brood was Bruce Wayne's aunt Agatha, in Batman #89 (February 1955). This kindly old biddy, with her tight bun of white hair, spectacles, lace-collar dress, and cameo brooch, served as a one-issue test case: a feminine presence introduced into Bruce and Dick's life to keep a watchful eye on their monkeyshines. But if the intent was to make it more difficult to derive any louche subtext to Batman and Robin's bond, this effect was vastly undercut by the story itself, which sees the Dynamic Duo only grudgingly tolerate Agatha's presence in their boys-only clubhouse. They construct a series of elaborate ruses to distract and deceive her so they can sneak off to be alone together. Aunt Agatha wouldn't stick around, but she served as a prototype for Aunt Harriet, who would arrive to fill Agatha's 'dithering matron' slot nine years hence." — Glen Weldon, The Caped Crusade: Batman and the Rise of Nerd Culture. Simon & Schuster: 2016, p. 60. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales over the next two years. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.
