BATMAN No. 47 * 1st Expanded Origin * Joe Chill Killed Provenance: DC Universe Collection Publisher: DC [Indicia: National Comics Publications, Inc.] Date Published: June-July, 1948 Description: CGC certified: Fine+ (6.5). White pages. Grader notes: "Erasure mark front cover; creasing to cover; spine stress lines to cover; very light stain right bottom of back cover; writing on cover." Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION. CGC Census: 321 graded copies (267 Universal, 10 Qualified, 44 Restored). GPAnalysis: A 6.5 sold for $5595 in 4/23. Credits: Cover: Bob Kane. Scripts: Bill Finger. Art: Bob Kane (Batman and Robin only), Lew Sayre Schwartz, Charles Paris (inks). Overstreet: "1st detailed origin The Batman; 1st Bat-signal cover this title (see Detective #108); Batman tracks down his parents' killer and reveals i.d. to them." Bat-cyclopedia: "In June-July 1948 Batman and Robin match wits with the CATWOMAN; apprehend WARDEN BELTT; and meet JOE CHILL." — Michael L. Fleisher, The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes Vol. 1: Batman. Macmillan: 1976, p. 121. Details: Following the trail of a major smuggling operation, Batman discovers that the leader of the organization is none other than Joe Chill, the criminal who killed his parents. Eager for vengeance, Batman corners Chill and reveals his secret identity in an attempt to get Chill to confess: "I am the son of the man you murdered! I AM BRUCE WAYNE!" A terrified Chill flees and seeks protection from his criminal cronies. Upon hearing that Chill is single-handedly responsible for creating their nemesis, the outraged gangsters pump Chill full of lead before he can divulge Batman's identity. * With the help of her cat Hecate, Catwoman once again breaks out of prison. Donning a disguise and a new name, Catwoman becomes Madame Moderne, the publisher of high-fashion magazine Damsel. Her new position enables "Madame Moderne" to gain access to expensive couture and jewelry, which Catwoman can then steal, but Batman soon puts a stop to her crimes against fashion. The Significance of Joe Chill's Death: "This poignant tale is a true standout among the Batman comic books of the era. By addressing the tragic murder that drove Bruce Wayne to become Batman, it marked a turning point in Batman's decade-long war on crime. '[Batman has always been] out there making sure that the same trauma and tragedy he had to deal with never happens to others, notes longtime DC Comics writer Mark Waid. 'That's heroic. That's selfless, a sacrifice. Sure, to some degree, Batman was always looking for Joe Chill, but that was never his prime motivation.' "With the death of his parents' killer, Batman was no longer driven by a personal quest for vengeance and could truly say that his motivation was justice. As 'The Origin of Batman' closed the books on the murder of the Waynes, it ushered in a new era of hope and optimism for Batman." — Andrew Farago and Gina McIntyre, Batman: The Definitive History of the Dark Knight in Comics, Film and Beyond. Insight Editions: 2022, p. 37. The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, including a copy of every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014.
