BASAN, Pierre-François (1723-1797). Recueil d'estampes graveés d'après le tableaux du cabinet du Monseigneur le duc de Choiseul. Paris, 1771. -- [ Bound with :] BACHALIER, Jean Jacques (1724-1806). Collection de cul de lampes et fleurons. 4 o (260 x 182 mm). 62 plates (not complete) and others. Contemporary marbled sheep gilt. Provenance : Enrique F. Guttierrez-Roig; acquired from Bernard Quaritch, 1982. Album of 62 ornament engravings (without text) mostly by Pierre-Philippe-Choffard (1730-1809) including floral arrangements. A French draughtsman and engraver, showed great aptitude at a young age for drawing flowers and ornaments, so he was placed with the map engraver Guillaume Dheulland. He later received lessons from Pierre-Edme Babel, an engraver of ornaments. After his map cartouches drew attention between 1753 and 1756, he was commissioned to execute the tail-pieces for the celebrated 1762 edition of La Fontaine's Contes , published by the Fermiers-Généraux (see lot 575).
