Herissant [vols III-X], 1748. 10 volumes bound in 11, 4° (288 x 220mm). Engraved frontispiece by Le Bas after Caze, engraved portrait frontispiece of the dedicatee by J. Daullé after de Silvestre, engraved dedication with vignette of the dedicatee's arms, 3 engraved folding maps after Robert hand-coloured in outline, 59 engraved head- and tailpieces by Le Bas after Le Bas, J. Frontier, Canot, and Gravelot, woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials, engraved title vignettes by J.P. Le Bas after Eisen, half titles to vols. II-X. (Occasional light spotting or light marking, a few gatherings lightly browned, occasional marginal paper flaws, gathering VII/5O repeated.) Contemporary French red morocco gilt, boards with arms of Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony, triple fillet borders, gilt board edges and turn-ins, spines gilt in compartments, gilt morocco lettering-pieces in 2, others decorated with floral and star tools, gold-printed patterned endpapers, gilt edges (some light rubbing and scuffing, slight chipping and bumping to extremities, some surface splitting on joints). Provenance : Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony, Elector of Trier (1787-1802, binding, bookplates as Elector of Trier). FIRST EDITION, LARGE-PAPER SET. FROM THE LIBRARY OF CLEMENS WENZESLAUS OF SAXONY, son of August III of Poland (the dedicatee of the work), in a fine, contemporary armorial binding, possibly for presentation.
