BARETTI, Giuseppe Marc'Antonio. An Account of the Manners and Customs of Italy ... the second edition corrected . London: for T. Davies and L. Davis, 1769. 2 volumes, 8°. 2 leaves of engraved music in volume II. (Some browning and occasional staining.) 19th-century half calf (extremities worn), uncut. Each volume in modern solander box. Provenance : Joseph Vernazza (armorial bookplate); CESARE BALBO (with copious manuscript marginalia, notes to endpapers and several pages of the historian's loosely-inserted notes in vol. I). Second edition. Balbo published a number of important works in the earlier part of the 19th century, including the Storia d'Italia , 2 vols., 1839, Della letteratura negli XI primi sesoli dell' êra cristiana , 1836, the Vita di Dante , 2 vols., 1839, and Meditazioni storiche , 1842. In this heavily-annotated copy of Barreti's work, he does not so much dispute as discuss or enlarge upon Baretti's half-anglicised view of society and literature. For example, he agrees that the Italian habit of gallantry to women is an important question (I, p. 102), and takes great interest in Baretti's opinion that much Italian drama and opera is too formal and stylised (II, p. 174ff.). The author's perception that the character of the Piedmontese is remarkable different from that of other Italians draws forth many comments of his own (II, p. 113ff.). (2)
