Beschreibung:

Mapa Del Estado de Chihuahua.
Mexico, after 1854]. Pen and ink manuscript folding pocket map, hand-colored in outline (19 1/2 x 14 3/4 inches, 500x375 mm). Sectioned and linen-backed at an early date. Folds into early diced morocco-backed boards. Condition: Minor spotting; corners of binding rubbed. Provenance: Thomas G. Williams (early owner’s signature on the front pastedown, San Antonio, 11 December 1874); Marie Williams (early signature in pencil on verso). unusual early manuscript map of the mexican state, showing the border following the gadsen purchase. This finely accomplished manuscript map of Chihuahua is similar to the one found in Antonio Garcia Cubas’s Atlas Geografico , but with many additional place names and roads and with the state divided into 13 municipalities (the other divided into 6). An interesting pencil note at the bottom of the map reads “$60 pr 2500 copies, 2 1/2 c a piece,” possibly suggesting that the map was a study for printed version. The early Texas provenance on this map is interesting and likely refers to Thomas Williams (1821-1889), a descendent of the early settler of the same name.
