BARBERIS, Philippus de (b. ca 1426)]. Opusculum de vaticiniis sibillarum . Oppenheim: [Jacob Köbel, ca 1514]. 4 o (189 x 131 mm). Large woodcut on title-page and 12 full page woodcuts within architectural borders of female soothsayers with xylographic quotations from their prophecies. 19th-century hard-grained maroon morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Clarke & Bedford (spine faded, a bit rubbed). Provenance : Beckford, Hamilton Palace (sale, Sotheby's, part III, 3 July 1883, lot 239); J.H. Johnson, 1898; Henry Clements (bookplate, sale Sotheby's, 4 July 1966, lot 221); acquired from Goodspeed's Book Shop, 1968. This short work on the prophecies of the Sibyls is now generally dated to around 1514. It was printed by Jacob Köbel who operated the first press at Oppenheim where he printed from 1503 to 1532. Apart from the title cut, the series of fine woodcuts depicting each of the twelve sibyls are printed on versos throughout. VERY RARE: no copy has appeared at auction since this copy was sold at the Clements sale in 1966. Goff B-122 (after 1500); HC* 2454; Rosenwald 616 (dating it circa 1510).
