Mainz: Johann Schoeffer, 1531. 2 o (286 x 194 mm). Woodcut title illustration printed from two blocks, 21 woodcut illustrations in text, of which 3 full page and several composed of two blocks, woodcut printer's device at end. Sixth Mainz and fifth Schoeffer edition of the influential legal treatise known as the Bambergesche Halsgerichtsordnung , attributed to Johann von Schwarzberg (1463-1528), and based on a combination of local and foreign law, in particular Italian criminal law. The work was a milestone in the development of criminal justice and was published in many editions. The woodcuts of this edition and Schoeffer's other editions of the work are slightly reduced copies of the woodcuts of the first edition (Bamberg 1507), with the addition of a few small cuts from his editions of the German Livy (1505 and later); they depict the course of 16th-century criminal proceedings: arrest, questioning, torture, sentencing and execution.
