Beschreibung:

Partial balance book concerning the legal assets remaining in the estate of the late P.L. Symes, now under the administration of Carter Moore Braxton III (1787-1855), of the illustrious Braxton-Carter families with deep-seated ties to Virginia, 6pp, 8 x 12.5 in. 1823-1833. Boldly headed, "Carter Braxton, adm[inistrat]or de bonis non," clarifying Braxton's role as the party responsible for Symes's remaining assets. Records advances paid to Braxton and money owed by the estate, including attorney fees and other legal expenses. Notably, Braxton is the grandson of Declaration of Independence signer Carter Braxton (1736-1797), a merchant and politician active in the Virginia legislature for over twenty-five years. The maternal grandfather of the elder Carter Braxton is Robert "King" Carter (1663-1732), a wealthy land and slave owner who served as a Speaker of the House of Burgesses (1696–1698), treasurer of colonial Virginia (1699–1705), and a member of the governor's Council (1700–1732). Both of these progenitors fathered many children: Robert Carter had fifteen children, while Braxton Carter is believed to have fathered as many as eighteen, including Carter Braxton II (1764-1809), the father of the administrator named here. Condition: Creasing with tearing, at times significant, at fold lines, with areas of staining and discoloration.
