The maternal grandfather of the elder Carter Braxton is Robert "King" Carter (1663-1732), a wealthy land and slave owner who served as a Speaker of the House of Burgesses (1696–1698), treasurer of colonial Virginia (1699–1705), and a member of the governor's Council (1700–1732). Both of these progenitors fathered many children: Robert Carter had fifteen children, while Braxton Carter is believed to have fathered as many as eighteen, including Carter Braxton II (1764-1809), the father of the administrator named here.
