(Military) Officer’s 1st type breast badge, silver-gilt, hallmarks for London 1919; 1914-15 Star (Capt., R.A.M.C.); British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. oak leaf (Lt. London Gazette 1 January 1916; 10 July 1919. Hugh Glencairn Monteith was born on 11 May 1883, the son of the Rev. John Monteith, of Moniave-Glenluiart, Dumfriesshire. He was educated at Fettes College and Pembroke College, Cambridge for the medical profession and joined the R.A.M.C. as a Lieutenant in July 1910, being promoted to Captain in January 1914. For his wartime services he was twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O. and O.B.E. He played rugby for Cambridge, the London Hospital and for Scotland.
