A golfing trophy won by Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, CBE, DSO, DFC, electroplated modelled as a devil smoking a pipe with club over shoulder and bag on floor engraved 'Lucifer Golfing Society', the ebonised plinth with plaque engraved 'Spring Meeting 1956, Winner Group Captain D.R.S. Bader C.B.E., D.S.O., D.F.C.', 16.5cm high Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader (1910-1982), was a WWII Royal Air Force flying ace. Bader was accredited with 22 aerial victories, 4 shared victories, 6 probables, 1 shared probable and 11 enemy aircraft damaged. Bader's Pilot's Flying Log Book for the period 1928-1932 was sold in these rooms in November 2011 (Lot 108) for �23,500. ^NThe Lucifer Golfing Society was formed in 1921 by Sir Hedley le Bas and friends. It was an exclusive Gentleman's club aimed at promoting friendship and goodwill through golf within the Commonwealth. It took its name the slang Lucifer which for a striking match used in the Great War. (1)
