AUTOGRAPHS -- ROTH, Carl and & Ph. SCHMIDT. Handschriftenproben zur Basler Geistesgeschichte des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts. Basel, 1926. 2 o (372 x 270 mm). 30 collotype plates (one folding). Unbound as issued in original cloth-backed portfolio, cloth ties. Limited edition of 120 copies, this unnumbered. A valuable collection of the autographs of the principal humanists who contributed to the intellectual life of Basel, beautifully reproduced in their original size. [ With: ] GEIBEL, Carl and Carl Herz von HERTENRIED. - Autographen Sammlungen Dr. Carl Geibel, Leipzig [und] Carl Herz v. Hertenried, Wien. Leipzig: C.G. Boerner, 1911. 2 parts, 8 o. Frontispieces (1 colored), 4pp. text inserted between pp.24 and 25 in part I. Later cloth-backed boards, original wrappers bound in. The sale of this outstanding collection acquired notoriety owing to the following occurrence: J.P. Morgan had been invited by the Kaiser for lunch in his yacht "Hohenzollern;" he decided, or was advised, to bring Wilhelm II as a present Luther's magnificent letter to Charles V, which, however, was never sent off to the imperial addressee, but printed in the same year by Thomas Anshelm Hagenau, 1521 (Benzing 1027). In order to make sure that the present would be impressive enough (and obtain the right publicity), Morgan employed two agents who were unaware of their respective roles: one, "ein Herr Marfels aus Berlin" (the collector of old pocket watches?), was instructed to bid up to 100,000 Marks, the other, Tammaro De Marinis, sent especially for this purpose all the way from Florence, to bid beyond that figure; it was knocked down to him for 102,000 Marks, an unheard-of figure at that time. He must have been authorized to reveal the name of the collector for whom he had acted, for it duly appeared in the press. De Marinis later discovered by whom Marfels had been commissioned. The estimate of the letter was 5,000 Marks, bidding started at 3,000 M., after 8,000 everybody else dropped out. After lunch the Emperor bestowed on Morgan the Prussian Order of the Red Eagle. -- 25 others. (27)
