Lot of 11. Includes Henry White (1850-1927; diplomat, signer of Treaty of Versailles). ANS, n.p. (Washington?), Dec. 21, 1920. He was considered by Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson as one of the nation's best diplomats. Wilson sent him as one of the five Peace Commissioners to work out a treaty to end WWI. After White's return, he worked tirelessly to bring the Senate Republicans and Wilson together to ratify the treaty (the Senate rejected it in March 1920). Perry Belmont (1851-1947; House, NY and diplomat). Sgd. calling card. George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882; diplomat and philologist). ANS, (place unreadable) Dec. 25, 1880. Appointed by Lincoln as Ambassador to Italy, March would become the longest serving chief of mission in US history. He is also considered by some to be the first American environmentalist. In Man and Nature (1864) he argued that man needs to manage resources and keep them in good condition, not merely exploit them. Gustav Koerner (1809-1896; journalist, politician, judge, statesman). Lincoln appointed him Minister to Spain in the middle of the Civil War. ALS, Belleville, Nov. 12, 1868 Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. (1902-1985; Senator, MA; ambassador to United Nations, South Vietnam, West Germany, Holy See). TLS, New York, 4 Aug. 1955. Alvey Augustus Adee (1842-1924; diplomat). Served his career in the Department of State (1886-1924), and was acting Secretary of State during the Spanish-American War. TLS, Washington, 17 Sept, 1898. Adlai Stevenson II (1900-1965; politician and diplomat). Stevenson served as Governor of Illinois (1949-1953) and Ambassador to United Nations (1961-1965), among other posts. He was also the Democratic candidate for President in 1952. TNS, n.d., n.p. Theodore Sedgwick Fay (1807-1898; writer and diplomat). Fay served as secretary of legation at London, Berlin, and Minister at Berne, Switzerland. Clipped signature. John Lawrence Jr. (1785-1849; lawyer, diplomat, politician). Lawrence served in both state and federal assemblies, and as diplomat to Sweden in the absence of the Minister. Clipped signature, "Your Humble Svt., John Lawrence Junr." [Note: We think this is the correct John Lawrence but the signature is out of context, and it is not certain.] ALS on "The Special Mission of the United States of America Lausanne," July 23, 1923. Name is uncertain other than middle initial "R." Last name appears to begin with D (but it is not Harry Dwight), so he may be one of the clerks. We have been unable to locate a full list of Americans in the Mission. The letter contains quite a bit of information on the conference and State Department positions (especially the relative rankings of Secretary of State, ambassadors, ministers). Also included is a ticket to the conference for 24 July 1903, the day the main treaty was signed. Mrs. Charles Francis Adams, ALS on mourning bordered note paper, dated 27 Sept. 1865. The mourning border was likely in honor of Lincoln (it had only been 5 months since the assassination). Her husband (who was the son of John Quincy Adams) was Lincoln's Minister to England.
