Title: Autograph Letter, signed, regarding an article for publication Author: Dana, Richard Henry, Jr. Place: Boston Publisher: Date: September 16, 1858 Description: Autograph Letter, signed. 1 pp. on folded sheet. Probably to a Boston newspaper editor: “If the enclosed is not too long and not uninteresting to your readers, I wish you would give it a place. It has not appeared in any secular paper. If it is, will you do me the favor to replace it in the envelope and I will send for it, as it is my only copy.” Nearly thirty years after he wrote the American literary classic of sea adventure and California travel, Two Years Before the Mast, Richard Henry Dana Jr. was a successful Boston lawyer, passionately opposed to slavery on the eve of Civil War. In these tumultuous days, Dana found little time for writing, and it’s probable that the “not too long” piece he offered with this letter was his only recorded publication of 1858, a column that appeared two days later in the Boston Daily Advertiser - on “Harvard Football”. Lot Amendments Condition: Creased from mailing; fine. Item number: 223735
