Autograph Letter Signed ("John J Audubon"), 1 p, 4to, Edinburgh, January 1, 1839, to William Morris of Philadelphia, mounting remnants to verso at corners, else about fine. Boldly signed letter of introduction for his son Victor Gifford, who was planning to settle in Philadelphia. Audubon at this time was planning his own return to America as well after some time abroad raising funds and publishing. In part: "Allow me the pleasure of presenting to your acquaintance, my Eldest son Victor Gifford, who will in all probability spend some time in your City. He now returns to America with the view of settling there permanently. / Six or seven years have lapsed since he last trod on our Shores, and returning as he now does almost as a stranger, I beg of you to present him to any such of your friends as you may think fit...." Audubon himself was born in Haiti and did not land in America until the age of 18. This letter is an interesting comment on Audubon's own sense of American identity. See illustration.
