AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('Dover'), to an unnamed correspondent, written from Ross in Ireland just after the Battle of the Boyne (1 July 1690), asking, 'now this business is over', to know his 'doome' before William III leaves for England; Dover seeks to exculpate himself from blame, beginning by saying that the night before he 'was sett free all ye gragoones being broken away' and that Captain Boyle had come to see him on behalf of the Brigadier 'with all ye Civility imaginable', letting him know 'how sorry hee was for what had happened by a wrong information' and that he had informed the King of the mistake; he declares himself incapable of acting against his promises ('...which is all I desire for I had no other trouble in this matter but ye feare his maiestie would have thought mee capable of doeing any thing contrary to what I had promised in my letter to Lieutenant Generall kerke [one of William III's military commanders] which I never will whilest I live...'); he then asks his correspondent to see if it is possible for him to have a pass to go into England where he promises to live a strictly private life ('...I will live so retiredly, and so free from medling with ye least thing in nature that Concerns ye publicke that his maiestie shall never have any reason whatsoever to mistrust my word and faith...'), offering never to go more than ten miles from any place the King allows him to live; he further suggests that if it proves not convenient for him to go to England at present that he might have a pass to go to Holland; tells his correspondent that he has written to Kirke in the same vein and trusts that the King 'has not so...forgott mee but hee will doe something for my own sake'; and reflecting: '...I know very well that having faithfully served a master [James II] from therteene yeares of age till now that ye french did not thinke fitt I should do it any longer will not make his maiestie have ye worse oppinion of mee...', 2 pages, small folio, contemporary endorsement, 'Ross' [Ireland], 25 July 1690
