Title: Autograph Letter signed by Wellington (as Wellesley), regarding the campaign and events in Portugal Author: Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Place: Lavos, Portugal Publisher: Date: August 5, 1808 Description: 17 lines, on both sides of single sheet 10¾x8. Letter written by Wellington just four days after landing with the first British army at Mondego River in Portugal, at the start of the first stage of the Peninsular Campaign. The letter begins: “Dear Sir, I have just received your letter of the 4th. If you wish it, & if it is the desire of the Genl. Officer of the Portuguese troops, I will give directions that 70,000 rounds of Musquet Ammunition may be delivered to the Govr. of Figueras so the Portuguese Officers may move the to Lyreia if they shall think proper…” The letter may have been addressed to Col. Nicholas Trant, a British officer in the Portuguese services, or to Col. Browne, an intelligence officer and quartermaster general of the Portuguese at Oporto. Lot Amendments Condition: Letter worn, soiled and darkened, as befits a letter written under battlefield conditions; there are a few chips, and old paper repairs on verso affecting a few words, and one more recent taper repair; good condition.
