"Bancroft and Halleck live in New York, and so, I think, does Paulding. I do not know where Mayo(?) resides, but a letter would probably reach him through his publisher, G.P. Putnam, of New York. Duane(?) lives in Boston, except during the _____? season. Yours truly, Nath'l Hawthorne." The first three writers mentioned would be George Bancroft, American historian and statesman, sometime Secretary of the Navy who established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845; Fitz-Greene Halleck, American poet notable for his satires; and James Kirke Paulding, an American writer who also served as the United States Secretary of the Navy. A letter significant for its associations, one of the leading American authors of the 19th century making reference to the homes of his literary associates. Lot Amendments Condition: Old folds with some creasing, very good. Item number: 247184
