Title: Autograph Letter Signed by Charmian London to Mr. Wm. F. Reinhard Author: London, Charmian Place: Glen Ellen, CA Publisher: Date: Jan. 12 1917 Description: 7 pages, on rectos only of 7 sheets of plain notepaper, 7x5. With hand-addressed Jack London stationary mailing envelope. A warm letter from Charmian to William F. Reinhard of Dayton, Ohio, an admirer of Jack and his writing who had apparently corresponded with Jack for several years. The letter was written just over a month after Jack's death, on his birthday. Content includes reference to Charmian's yet-unwritten memoir of the Londons' time in the islands - published later in the year as "Our Hawaii." Dated "Glen Ellen, Cal., Jack's Birthday, Jan. 12, 1914," the letter reads: My Dear Mr. Reinhard: - How good you were to write to me! And your fair + just understanding of Jack London has made you write me in a way that is all comfort to me. I haven't a complaint. How could I, after nearly a dozen years of such life! And you have sensed him aright; he died as he had always desired, in full power of brain and body, painlessly and with a smile on his lips. Never did I see a human being love life and living more than did he. . . nor a man so ready for the Long Sleep when it should overtake him. I am glad you've read my Log. It's almost an intimate biography of Jack London. When I can get around to it, I shall put into shape another book written as a part of the Log–giving all the experiences we had in Hawaii while the Snark was repairing to get away to the South Seas. This being mostly land travel, really had no place in the Log. So those who enjoyed reading of Jack London in the Snark, may look forward to a good-sized book about him written in the same vain. I am inclosing a full list of his books, with publishers, dates, etc. It makes me weep to read the smug reviews–written by persons who rarely mention that he had written thirty books! There will be over 50, when I get done collecting. I am glad you love Jack's books. They are so wondrously varied. Did you know that he has several in the universities? Call of the Wild, for English; Before Adam, for anthropology; another (I think People of the Abyss), on sociology. Also, I am glad you have a book from him. It must indeed be a treasure. Thanking you again for remembering me. Gratefully yours, Charmian K. London. You may be interested in reading inclosed clippings, etc. May ask you to return those so marked." The book referred to above is no-doubt the inscribed "Abysmal Brute" in this sale. Lot Amendments Condition: Letter very good, envelope worn. Item number: 193065
