Title: Autograph Letter from Jack London, to his future wife Charmian Kittredge Author: London, Jack Place: Angel Island, etc. Publisher: Date: Oct. 22nd & 23rd [1903] Description: 6 pages, mostly in ink but with several lines in pencil, on rectos of 6 sheets. 15x23.5 cm. (6x9¼”), held together with a straight pin. Jack London is cruising the San Francisco Bay aboard the Spray, the 30-foot sloop he had bought the previous May, with the avowed purpose of recapturing the feel of the water for his new book, The Sea-Wolf. He is temporarily stuck on Angel Island, “The wind failed us, and we ran in here to anchor. Tomorrow shall be lucky, this kind of weather, if we make San Pablo Bay…” The following evening he is “off what I think is the town of Rodeo. I think it’s Rodeo, from my recollections of eleven or twelve years ago. Anyway, we’re somewhere between Pinole & Selby’s Smelter. Ran on a few hours after dark, you see, & then dropped the hook…” He then waxes poetic, and romantic, “And still I think of you and see you as I last saw you, in white. Dear dear woman, I love you so. ‘Just Charmian’, has been the phrase frequently in my thoughts to-day. And the marvel that it is you, is fresher than ever. You, the Charmian who use to ride through the Piedmont Hills, and who would make me glad whenever I saw her… I adore you, worship you, die for you if needs be – but I’d rather live for you.” The letter is unsigned, as the two were still hiding their relationship since Jack was still married to Bess. Lot Amendments Condition: Fine condition. Item number: 232392
