AUSTRIAN EMPIRE -- MAIRE, F.J Carte Hydrographique des Etats de la Maison d'Autriche en deca du Rhin. . Vienna: [1786]. Engraved wallmap of the river systems connecting with the Rhine, extending from the Adriatic to Kracow, Lemburg to Frankfurt, on four sheets, each 520 x 780mm, overall 1020 x 1540mm, uncoloured with wide margins, deckle edges. Title in French and German at lower left and right corners both set in decorative cartouches showing canals and barges. (Outer blank margins torn, some with slight loss); together with an accompanying series of six local maps showing the confluence points of various canals with rivers and vertical profiles of those canals, the six folio sheets, each c.530 x 400mm, stiched together as issued at outer margin. Maire who was based in Vienna describes himself as a hydrographer and military Engineer. This map is particularly interesting in that it is the "motorway" map of its time, and gives a full overview of the water transportation links across the Empire, vital for the passage of large quantities of goods and products that began to be produced as the Industrial Revolution devenloped.
