Three half-titles (of 4, lacks half-title to vol. III, see below). (M6 and M7 from Northanger Abbey vol. II sprung, C6 and C7 in Persuasion vol. II misbound between B4 and C1, some occasional pale spotting and browning.) 19th-century half calf, marbled boards, spines gilt (front joint of vol. I split, vol. II rebacked, preserving original spine, some rubbing and slight wear). Provenance : possibly a member of the Talbot family, also Earls of Shrewsbury (armorial bookplate with motto reading "prest d'acomplir"). FIRST EDITIONS. The half-titles in this copy are as follows: volume I with half-title for 'Biographical Notice' on a2 (as in Gilson); volume II with half-title for Northanger Abbey vol. II as A1 (not A2 as in Gilson); volume III lacking half-title; volume IV with half-title for Persuasion vol. II as A1 (not A2 as in Gilson). Written during the years 1798-99, Jane Austen sold Northanger Abbey , originally entitled Susan , to Crosby & Son in 1803 for /P10. When the novel failed to appear after six years, Austen wrote to Crosby for an explanation. He replied that they were under no obligation to publish her work, but that they were prepared to return the manuscript in exchange for the original sum paid for it. In 1816, Jane's brother Henry finally bought back the novel, and it was published posthumously with Persuasion in December 1817. Gilson A9; Keynes 9; Sadleir I, 62e. (2)
