Provenance Robert Hershkowitz, Ltd., Sussex, 2004 Catalogue Essay Auguste Mestral studied photography with Gustave Le Gray and worked with him on a government commission to photograph France’s architectural heritage in the early 1850s. On his own he photographed the restoration of Notre Dame de Paris, and this image shows a sculpture of St. Denis, the first bishop of Paris, who was martyred by decapitation at the hands of the Roman authorities in the third century.
