"Black Tom," the mascot of the newly formed U.S. Tank Corps, seen here living up to the Corps' motto, the title of the poster. "In this improbable version of tank warfare, the flaming colors, the Black Tomcat mascot with its vicious claws . . . project an image of sexual energy" (Paret p. 56).
