August Lohr German/American, 1842-1919 The Castle of Chapultepec, 1897 Signed August Lohr and inscribed and dated Mexico 1897 (lr) Watercolor on paper laid down to heavy card 8 x 10 1/2 inches Provenance: Acquired at an estate sale, Long Island, NY, circa 2010 In 1889 the San Francisco Sentinel reported that August Lohr was the manager of a company which was considering exhibiting panoramas in Mexico. By 1890 he appears to have departed from Milwaukee, where he had established the American Panorama Company, for Mexico. The following year, a painting by Lohr depicting Chapultepec Castle was shown at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City. In 1899 his landscapes of Mt. Tamalpais, the Santa Cruz Mountains, and Mexico were exhibited at the Mechanics Institute Fair in San Francisco. C
Paper is lightly toned, with matburn around the edges and with some paper residue adhering to the upper 1/4 inch of the composition. The heavy card support is acidic and tattered and torn at the lower edge, but the watercolor itself is intact.
