Bowen (scattered spotting and offsetting, plate 83 with short marginal repaired tear, occasional short tears and browning at the sheet edges). Half-titles, general index at end of each work (volume II lacks half-title). Uniformly bound in publisher's black half morocco gilt, marbled boards, t.e.g. (light wear at extremities, slight buckling to spines). A FINE SET OF "THE MOST COMPACT ASSEMBLAGE OF AUDUBON'S CHIEF LITERARY AND ARTISTIC EFFORTS" (Tyler). The present set belongs to one of two editions reprinted by George Lockwood between 1870 and 1871. The Birds and Quadrupeds became financial and popular successes in the smaller format, with the Audubon family authorizing as many as eight editions after Audubon's death in 1851. George Lockwood bound the set in eight, rather than seven, volumes and printed the plates whenever possible from the same stone and stereotype plates made in the 1840s and 1850s. The Lockwood edition represents the last octavo edition printed from these original stones; they were destroyed sometime after 1870 by a fire in a Philadelphia warehouse.
