Half-titles in volumes 1 and 3 only. 500 plates after Audubon, by W.E. Hitchcock, R. Trembly and others, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen, with wood-engraved anatomical diagrams in the text. (Some spotting, mostly marginal and to text leaves, a few leaves browned, light dampstain at top of later leaves in volume one, title-page for volume one with tear and mounted). Original publisher's brown morocco, edges gilt (some light rubbing, a few hinges cracked, recased, endpapers renewed). Second octavo edition, the first to be published after Audubon's death, by his son Victor, and the first to incorporate tinted backgrounds to the plates. Nissen IVB 52; Sabin 2364. (7) (7)
