The Quadrupeds of North America.
New York: V.G. Audubon, [1849-]1854. 3 volumes, large 8vo (265 x 175 mm). Half-titles. 155 hand-colored lithographic plates by W.E. Hitchcock and R. Trembly after J.J. and John Wodehouse Audubon, printed by Nagel & Weingartner and colored by J. Lawrence or printed and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia. Publisher’s dark brown morocco, covers panelled in gilt with elaborate cornerpieces, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and fourth, the others with repeat decoration in gilt made up from various small tools, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Condition : light offsetting of a few plates onto facing text; neatly rebacked, spines evenly faded, light spoting to endpapres in vol.II. Provenance : Ogilvie Blair Graham (armorial bookplate, presentation inscription in each volume's half-title from John Wodehouse Audubon "Mr. O.B. Graham with the compliments of J. A."). presentation copy of the first 8vo edition, containing reduced versions of th full compliment of plates published in both the original folio edition of 1845-1848 and the scarce 1854 folio supplement. The work was originally the result of a collaboration between Audubon and John Bachman, a Pastor from Charleston, S.C., and a recognized authority on the subject. Bachman was also a long-time family friend, and two of his daughters married two of Audubon’s sons. By the final stages of the folio edition, Audubon's health was in such a delicate state that it was left to his sons to undertake the production and publication of the present edition. John Wodehouse Audubon painted some of the original images and arranged, with his brother Victor, the publication of the octavo edition of the Quadrupeds . Issued in 31 parts, the Quadrupeds echoed the earlier success of the octavo Birds : unsurprisingly, enjoying a far wider circulation than the spectacular but expensive and unwieldy large folio. The smaller and very much cheaper octavo edition went through a number of editions, selling in large numbers and enjoying a far wider circulation. Nissen ZBI 163; Reese 38.
