AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES 1785-1851. The Birds of America, From Drawings Made in the United States and Their Territories. New York: V.G. Audubon, 1856.
7 volumes, 8vo (260 x 170 mm). 500 colored lithographic plates by J. T. Bowen after Audubon, tissue guards, illustrations in the text.
WITH: The Quadrupeds of North America. 3 volumes, 8vo. 155 lithographed plates.
All in publisher's uniform brown morocco elaborately lettered and decorated in blind, spines with 5 raised bands, lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Rubbed, some spines tender, typical scattered foxing throughout, some volumes with staining (oil?) into lower margins.
FIRST EDITION WITH COLORED BACKGROUNDS (second octavo edition) of Birds of America, and third octavo edition of Quadrupeds. This edition of Birds was the first to be issued after his death by his sons Victor and John and added the colored backgrounds. The Quadrupeds was the last great enterprise of Audubon's life: even at an advanced age, Audubon undertook, with his sons, John Woodhouse and Victor, an expedition in 1843 to obtain specimens from the Western frontier. Audubon's sons assisted and continued the project as their father's health began to wane, with John Woodhouse executing many of the original drawings and Victor handling much of the business side. The project was completed posthumously and still stands as one of Audubon's great achievements. Anker 19; Nissen IVB 52 (Birds); Nissen ZBI 163 (Quadrupeds); Sabin 2364 and 2368.
