Attributed to Louis Joseph Watteau “Fete
after an 1842 painting by Karl Friedrich Lessing depicting the Protestant reformer Jan Hus at the Council of Constance, and signed "M. Beety". Marked on the reverse with "KPM', the scepter mark and "H", plus the size mark, "20_14". NOTE: This plaque had been hanging in a home in Wichita Falls, Texas since the early 1900's. When the wooden back was removed to view the marks there were several pages of the German newspaper "Allgemeine Zeitung" dated May 4, 1868, between the plaque and the wooden back. Would appear to have been there since the plaque was first framed. Plaque: 14.25"H x 20.75"W; Frame: 24.875"H x 31.25"W, Circa - 1860's.
