Attributed to Hugh Barron Portrait of William Hodgson, his Wife Mary, and their Children Inscribed on the letter in Mr. Hodgson's hand: To the Committee for Relief of American Prisoners Oil on canvas 42 3/4 x 55 3/4 inches (108.5 x 1451.7 cm) Said to have been painted at the family seat at Bowles, Chigwell, Essex, 1779 Provenance: Mrs. Smart (from a label on the reverse) William Hodgson (1725-1784), a London merchant, was an unsung hero of the American Revolution, collecting and dispensing money for the relief of American prisoners of war. On December 26, 1783, in recognition of his work on the prisoners' behalf, Benjamin Franklin wrote to the Continental Congress from Paris to suggest Hodgson as a possible American consul to Great Britain. Glue relined. Selectively cleaned; scattered touches of inpainting on the faces of all the sitters excpt for the little girl seated on her father's lap; also scattered touches of inpainting on the exposed arms. Some strengthening of contours, including along Mr. Hodgson's right leg. These small restorations have been done very carefully and to the highest professional standards. Altough showing some restoration, the painting is in very good condtion
