Attributed to Henry Schreiner Stellwagen (American, d. 1866) Tomb of Napoleon, and Suda Castle. Two works, (A) Tomb of Napoleon, 1826, unsigned, watercolor on embossed paper laid down on brown paper, showing a man in a hat sitting on a rock wall in a hilly and rocky landscape with houses and sheep, inscribed in the margin lower right "Tomb of Napoleon, St. Helena," 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in., unframed, (toning, small losses, glued to paper); and (B) Suda Castle, 1838, unsigned, watercolor on paper laid down on brown paper, showing a cliffside village and fortifications, inscribed lower center "Suda" and identified on brown paper "Suda Castle--Candia--June 1838," 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 in., unframed, (glued down); Sold together with two small circular prints showing farm scenes, each glued to the same brown paper. Note: Napoleon died May 5th, 1821 on St. Helena, a volcanic island 1200 miles off the west coast of Africa. Though his body was reportedly exhumed and brought to France in 1840, the burial site in a valley on St. Helena that Napoleon chose for himself remains intact. Suda Castle, in Tortosa, Catalunya, Spain, is a building that dates to the days of Moorish rule in Spain, and was built in the mid-10th century A.D.
