The floral element was probably painted by Jan Brueghel the Younger or a member of his circle, while the central medallion depicting the Triumph of Flora, as well as the five small oval medallions representing the five senses, embedded in the garland of flowers, are almost certainly attributable either to Frans Francken himself, or to someone in his workshop. The imposing garland of flowers surrounding the central scene seems to faithfully emulate one by Jan Brueghel the Elder, in a painting he produced in collaboration with Rubens (Virgin and Child in a Garland of Flowers; Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. 1764): this suggests that it was painted by someone close to him, such as his son Jan Brueghel the Younger. But while this type of composition and collaboration – one artist painting the decorative garland of flowers and the other the central medallion – was common enough in the first half of the seventeenth century, this painting is unusual because of its substantial size – a height of 171 cm – which makes this work a rarity. Very few known works of this type are as large as this... ____________________________________________ D’une qualité indéniable, en dépit d’une légère usure généralisée et d’un encrassement de la couche picturale qui empêchent parfois d’en saisir la technique précieuse et minutieuse, cette œuvre – inédite sur le marché – a probablement été exécutée par Jan Brueghel le Jeune ou un membre de son entourage pour la partie florale, tandis que le médaillon central, qui représente Le Triomphe de Flore, ainsi que les cinq petits médaillons ovales qui ornent la guirlande de fleurs et qui représentent les cinq sens, sont sans doute à attribuer à Frans Francken lui-même ou à quelqu’un de son atelier. L’imposante guirlande de fleurs qui entoure la scène centrale semble reprendre fidèlement celle exécutée par Jan Brueghel l’Ancien dans une œuvre peinte en collaboration avec Rubens (Vierge à l’Enfant dans une guirlande de fleurs ; Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. 1764), ce qui laisse penser qu’elle a été faite par un proche, comme son fils Jan Brueghel le Jeune. Mais si ce type de composition et de collaboration – un peintre exécutant la guirlande de fleurs décorative et l’autre le médaillon central – sont monnaie courante dans la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, celle-ci en revanche s’en dissocie par ses dimensions considérables – 171 cm de haut – qui font de cette œuvre une rareté. L’on ne connaît en effet que très peu d’œuvres de ce type atteignant une taille similaire…
