ATTRIBUTED TO PIAT JOSEPH SAUVAGE BACCHANAL OF PUTTI, OIL ON CANVAS, TROMPE L'OEIL
Born in Tournai, Piat Joseph Sauvage was accepted into the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1738. The artist worked first for Louis-Joseph de Bourbon (1736-1818) and then for King Louis XVI (1754-1793), for whom he painted portraits and medallions. His is, however, primarily known for his tromp l’oeil paintings of bas-relief sculptures depicting Classical and modern subjects, in the style the current work. Bas-relief imitations were a common theme in 18th century French painting, and Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) presented a number of these types of compositions at the Salon.Special notice
