(1739), the other vols are the 2nd ed. published in 1737 (Pt II-III), 1735 (Pt IV) and 1732 (for Pt V-VI-VII). First published in Amsterdam from 1705 to 1720, the various vols were updated at various times up to 1739 when the 4th ed. of vol. I appeared, stated as the "dernière edition, corrigée & augmentée". The 1st 4 vols seem to have undergone 4 printings with the later printings being the most desirable as they contain the maximum number of corrections and additions. The remaining 3 final vols were 1st issued between 1719-1720 and revised in 1732. Pt I to IV contains information concerning old (Greece, Rome) and modern Europe (incl. Russia and Turkey), pt V concerning Asia, pt VI about Africa and America and pt VII is a suppl. The text, divided into dissertations, is written by N. Gueudeville (1652-1721), a defrocked Benedictine monk, who became a journalist, a pamphleteer and a writer. Engr. ills : 7 allegorical titles by R. de Hooghe, J. Goeree & R. Picart, 7 title-vign. by R. Picart, 262 folding or double-paged and 16 single-paged engr. plates showing e.g. a double-page worldmap, map of the 4 continents, maps of the mentioned countries, city-views, genealogical trees, costumes, religious ceremonies, flags, coats-of-arms, marine, military and fortification instruments etc. With the splendid huge map of the Americas " Carte très curieuse de la Mer du Sud contenant des remarques nouvelles et très utiles non seulement sur les ports et îles de cette mer, mais aussy sur les principaux pays de l'Amérique tant septentrionale que méridionale (...) " (tiny hole on a fold junction). Ref. Cp. Koeman II, p. 33-35 : our ed. must be very rare since Koeman states that "no copy could be consulted". BnF. BL
