Beschreibung:

ATLAS - Philip CLUVER (1580-1622). [Introductio in Universam Geographiam. Amsterdam: no publisher, c.1660]. Folio (318 x 200mm). 3 small engraved diagrammatic plates at the front, exceptionally fine twin-hemisphere world map with emblematic figures representative of the continents in the borders [Shirley 586], and 41 engraved maps, all but 3 double-page (without text, lacking the printed title and without a frontispiece which is recorded as being present in some editions). Contemporary red parchment-backed marbled boards (extremities rubbed). Provenance: early [?late 18th-century] 2-page manuscript list of the maps at the front, not listing a frontispiece or printed title; remnants of red wax seal on rear pastedown. Sabin 13805 (citing numerous editions from 1624 to 1717, and an English edition from 1657, but we have been unable to date this edition precisely). The impressions are notably fine and dark. The double-page map of north and south America portrays California as an island. Sold as a collection of maps, not subject to return.
