Contemporary calf backed marbled boards. 14 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches (38 x 22.5 cm); with letterpress title and 20 engraved maps and 1 chart by Samuel Lewis and Amos Doolittle as called for on the title, most folding or double page, some printed on blue paper. Worn with the covers detached, tear into title, various neat ownership signatures, chipped edges, dampstaining to upper margin affecting most maps but extending past the plate mark on only a few, some tears to folds, spotting, small stains, a few early repairs, etc. Worthy of conservation but sold with all faults. The very rare 1795 American Atlas is the first atlas engraved and printed in America and also contains the first printed map of Virginia as a state. The map of the "Tennassee Government" is in the second state with that spelling (Tennessee would not become a state until the following year). Scarce at auction, ABPC reports only 7 complete copies sold in the past 30 years, most with condition issues similar to this copy. Phillips, Atlases 1362; Sabin 10855; Evans 28390. C
