Erste Ausgabe. - Colas 173 - Lipperheide Ld 31. - Frühe prachtvolle Lithographien aus Afghanistan, entworfen von James Atkinson (1786-1852) während des britischen Feldzuges nach Afghanistan im Jahre 1839. Atkinson nahm als leitender Mediziner an der Expedition teil, verließ Afghanistan jedoch kurz nach der Besetzung Kabuls durch die Briten und veröffentlichte einen Reisebericht und das vorliegende Ansichtenwerk, welches die verschiedenen Stationen des britischen Marsches von Indien über den Bolan-Pass nach Kandahar und bis nach Kabul dokumentiert. Der Band versammelt besonders prachtvolle Ansichten von Kabul, darunter eine Basarszene und zwei Ansichten der wunderschönen Gärten von Babur. Die dramatischen Tafeln sind eine umfangreiche Serie, die den Marsch der britischen Truppen durch den engen Bolan-Pass auf dem Weg zur Einnahme von Kandahar zeigt. - Etwas gebräunt, Ränder teils leicht stockfleckig. Tafel 12 und 13 am Außenrand etwas beschnitten.

With illustrated lithographed title, lithographed dedication and 25 toned lithographed plates. Modern half calf in slipcase. First edition. - Early impressive lithographs from Afghanistan, designed by James Atkinson (1786-1852) during the British campaign to Afghanistan in 1839. Atkinson participated in the expedition as chief medical officer, but left Afghanistan shortly after the occupation of the Kabul by the British and then one Travelogue and the this view work, which documents the different stations of the British March of India about the Bolan Pass to Kandahar and to the Kabul. The volume gathers particularly splendid views of Kabul, including a bazaar scene and two views of the beautiful gardens of Babur, but the most dramatic panels are an extensive series showing the march of British troops through the narrow Bolan Pass on their way to the capture of Kandahar. - 2 plates with minimal old restored tear, only slightly browned.
