ASIA -- MOLL, HERMAN (c.1655-1732). A Map of the East-Indies and the adjacent countries with the settlements factories and territories, explaining what belongs to England, Spain, France, Holland, Denmark, Portugal, etc. London: sold by H.Moll and John King [c.1720]. Hand -coloured engraved wall map of Asia, on two separate sheets, overall size 610 x 1020mm, deckle edges. The title set in a framed cartouche at right margin, inset views of Bantam, Goa, Swat, Madras and Bavaria. (Minor browning of margins.) An exceptionally finely hand-coloured example of the finest large-scale English map of the East Indies, laying out the forts, factories, and settlements of the Dutch East India and United East India Company (to whom this map is dedicated). This example was purchased in loose form, as shown by the deckle edges, but the map is usually found in Moll's famous atlas The World described , published c.1719-20. Moll had moved over from Germany and from 1708 began issuing a series of large 2 sheet maps of the world which he gathered together to form his world atlas. This example has particularly fine colouring, notably in the inset views. (2)
