Arthur Bowen Davies American, 1863-1928 Idyllic Landscape Signed A. B. Davies (ll) Oil on canvas 36 1/4 x 66 1/8 inches Provenance: Vance Jordan Fine Art, New York Private collection In contrast to the majority of American painters who rose to artistic maturity during the late 1890s, Davies eschewed the bright hues, broken brushwork and modern life subjects associated with Impressionism. Rather, he took a different path, going on to create lyrical, dream-like works of art that link him with the visionary tradition established by American painters such as Washington Allston and Albert Pinkham Ryder In Idyllic Landscape, Davies' romantic subject and deft manipulation of form and color evoke the pastoral tradition, depicting a carefree, dream-like world of purity and joy, where man and nature exist in perfect accord. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
Relined. Frame rubbing. There is a 3 inch vertical repaired tear in the landscape at the far center right and there is a 1/2 x 1 inch L-shaped repaired tear in the right register at the lower right corner. There is scattered light touches of inpaint in the sky and the landscape. There is no further restoration visible under UV light.
