Near-complete first edition of Picasso's catalogue raisonné. Volume one printed in English, remaining volumes printed in French. Volume one rebound in full black library-style buckram, remaining volumes in original wrappers and glassine; original printed ad laid-in in last volume; Volume II, part I, and Volume IV lacking glassine; Volumes II-X worn, many spines perished or starting, scattered chipping and wear, glassine worn with various chipping, tears, and loss; most volumes warped. Scattered annotations and underlining in first volume, residue from removed extraneous matter in same, repairs in same; other scattered wear throughout set. Ex-library with donation book-plate at front of each volume, library labels at foot of spines of Volumes XII-XXXII; red library sticker at foot of glassine on Volumes VI, XXI, XXII, XXVIII, and XXIX. Sold with all faults. A near-complete set of art critic Christian Zervos's monumental catalogue raisonné of Pablo Picasso Begun by Zervos in the early 1930s in partnership with Picasso himself, the project became Zervos's life's work, and took over four decades to complete. Picasso was intimately involved with the production and arrangement of the set, as well as the more than 16,000 listed pieces of art. An indispensable guide and reference for the artist's work. The long publication history of this work outlived both Zervos and Picasso, who were both dead by the time the final volume was published in 1978.
