Arquero (Tonita Pena, Quah Ah, 1893-1949). Portrait of a dancing American Indian, pen, ink and watercolour on wove, signed lower right, 23 x 14.5 cm (19 x 5.75 ins), framed and glazed (Qty: 1) Tonita Peña whose Indian name was Quah Ah, was born in 1893 in the Native American community (Pueblo) of San Ildefonso, New Mexico. At the age of 12, her mother died and her father who was unable to raise her entrusted her to live with her aunt and uncle at Cochiti Pueblo, where she spent the remainder of her life. Tonita was the only woman in the group of pueblo artists referred to as The San Ildefonso Self-Taught Group. She specialised in paintings of scenes of life at the pueblo, including ceremonial dances and everyday events.
