Arnold Genthe (German/American, 1869-1942) Five Photographs of the MacKaye Family, including Percy MacKaye, his brother Robert Keith MacKaye, his young daughters Arvia and Christy, and Percy and Robert with their mother, Mary. All signed "Arnold Genthe" in ink l.l. or l.r. Gelatin silver prints, image/sheet sizes to 9 1/2 x 7 3/16 in. (24.2 x 18.3 cm), unmatted, unframed. Condition: Four of five unmounted, scattered minor accretions and light silver mirroring. Provenance: From the collection of Percy MacKaye, by descent to the current owner Marion MacKaye Ober, Massachusetts. N.B. Although perhaps best known for his photographs of San Francisco's Chinatown, Genthe was a skilled portraitist, as these works demonstrate. He ran successful studios first in San Francisco and then in New York where his clientele included politicians, socialites, and literary figures.
